Planning a Significant Hair Colour Change: Cost, Timing and What Is Possible

Everywhere you look, there seems to be another beautiful hair transformation.

The internet is full of suggestions about which colours may suit you, whether to cover, soften or grow out your grey, and what to do when your colour has not turned out as you hoped.

The possibilities can be inspiring, but they can also leave you wondering what would work for your hair and where to begin.

A significant change needs more planning than choosing a photograph.

The time, price and number of visits depend on your starting colour, what has been done before, your hair’s condition and the result you would love.

We offer a complimentary consultation for simple colour or price questions, and a Detailed Colour Planning Consultation when a change, correction, grey transition or repair needs more time and a properly considered plan.

What does a colourist assess before recommending a plan?

We begin by listening to what you like, how you want to feel and what you would be comfortable looking after at home. Your colourist will also consider:

  • your natural colour, the colour you have now and what has been used before;
  • the colours and finishes you like and what has caught your eye in the photographs;
  • your hair and scalp health, including any sensitivities;
  • how the look you love could be interpreted for your own hair; and
  • the time and investment you feel comfortable with, including how often you would like to return.

Two clients can show the same photograph and need different plans. What is possible, and the best way to approach it, depends on the individual hair in front of us.

Why can two similar-looking colours cost different amounts?

Colour pricing reflects the time, product, technique and professional expertise needed to create the finished result. Our prices are a useful starting guide, while your starting colour, hair length, thickness and condition can all change the plan.

A Mini, Partial or Full Foil requires a different amount of placement and product. Maintaining a Global Colour or Retouch is also different from working through old colour. Toning, treatments, cutting and finishing may also form part of the plan.

Our service prices start from the amounts shown on the Services page. Once we have seen your hair and agreed on a direction, we can prepare an estimate for what your hair needs.

Can a major lightening change be completed in one appointment?

Sometimes it can. Sometimes the better decision is to work towards it over several appointments. The goal is beautiful colour while caring for your hair along the way.

Why might your colour change happen in stages?

A staged plan may help us:

  • protect your hair health, even when that means slowing the process down;
  • give you a beautiful, wearable result at each appointment; and
  • shape the plan around the time and investment you feel comfortable with.

Not every transformation needs stages. If yours does, we will explain why and what each appointment is working towards.

How do we choose the right colour plan?

The plan could involve foils, balayage, a global colour, toning or a combination. These are techniques, and you do not need to decide which one to ask for before you come in.

Online advice or AI can offer suggestions, but it cannot see and feel your hair, understand its history or have a real conversation with you. Your stylist brings experience, professional judgement and a human understanding of what matters to you. Once we understand what you love and where your hair is now, we can recommend the best pathway and explain why.

What should you bring to a colour consultation?

Bring two or three photographs on your phone if you have them. Photographs of your own hair when you loved it, and when you did not, can be especially helpful.

Share anything you remember about previous salon colour, colour used at home, lightening, smoothing or other chemical services, along with any sensitivity or concerns. You do not need to know the professional words or remember every detail.

Think about what you love in the photographs and anything you definitely do not want. Bring your questions too. If you are not sure yet, that is completely fine. Helping you work it out is part of the consultation.

What will we work out together?

The consultation should leave you feeling informed, not overwhelmed. Together, we will work out:

  • the direction we recommend and why;
  • what we can reasonably achieve at the first appointment and whether the change is likely to need stages;
  • the likely appointment time and estimated price;
  • how the colour may change between visits and what will help you enjoy it at home; and
  • the right next step for you.

Everything is different once we can see and feel your hair. This guide is not meant to give you all the answers before you arrive. It is here to help you understand what shapes the plan and give you confidence that you do not have to work it out alone.

At Absolute Hair, a consultation is a conversation. The aim is a plan that suits your hair, your life and the way you want to feel, with a result you love and can live with every day.
