A Simpler Summer Haircare Travel Kit
Packing for a holiday should not mean buying a completely new haircare routine. Start with what already works, then think about how swimming, time outdoors and your plans for styling might change what you need.

Pack for your holiday, not every possibility
A beach holiday, a city break and a family camping trip call for different routines. Think about how often you will swim, whether you will have a dryer and how you would like to wear your hair.
Begin with a suitable shampoo and conditioner, a gentle detangling tool and the styling product you actually use. Add heat protection if you plan to use heat. An extra mask or finishing product should have a clear job, rather than earn its place just because the bottle is small.
Keep product instructions available if you decant anything. Check your airline’s current baggage rules separately before packing liquids or styling tools.
Make a plan for swimming days
Include time to rinse your hair after swimming instead of leaving the pool or sea as the final step in your routine. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends rinsing promptly after swimming and using appropriate washing and conditioning care for pool exposure.
A swim cap is another option for regular pool sessions. If you are swimming frequently or your hair has become hard to manage, ask which cleansing and conditioning routine suits your hair and colour. Repeatedly adding oil is not a substitute for removing the things that have built up.
Protect your skin as well as thinking about your hair
Hair products should not be assumed to provide sun protection for exposed skin. Follow SunSmart New Zealand’s advice on shade, protective clothing, a suitable hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
Remember exposed areas around your parting, hairline and ears. A product described as protecting hair colour is not automatically a sunscreen for your scalp.
Choose an everyday holiday style
Plan one or two styles you can manage comfortably with the tools you are taking. You might prefer your natural texture, a loose up-style or a simple blow-dry with fewer finishing steps.
If you use a hot tool, follow its directions and those of your heat protector. Do not keep adding heat just because the weather has changed the finish. Our blow-dry guide can help you make the drying stage easier.
Talk about colour before the last-minute rush
If you would like a change before you travel, tell us your departure date and what your holiday involves. That gives us a chance to discuss the colour you want alongside the care and appointment time it needs.
